CMAP ONTO 2050 Plan Open House at Kane County
Residents are invited to discuss the draft plan with CMAP staff on June 27 at the Kane County Government Center
This is a reminder that Kane County will be hosting an open house event on Wednesday, June 27th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM for all residents that would like to learn and share input on the draft ONTO 2050 Plan. Attendees will have the opportunity to review the draft plan materials, ask questions of CMAP staff and provide comments to shape the final version of the plan to be published in the fall. The content sections of the draft plan are available online for browsing or you can download the full plan as a PDF. CMAP will also seek your feedback on the draft 2019-24 Transportation Improvement Program and air quality conformity analysis of proposed regional transportation projects.
The open house will be held at the Kane County Government Center Auditorium, 719 South Batavia Avenue, Geneva.

Kane County Community Health Assessment
Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan target key wellness issues
Earlier this year, the Kane County Health Department, in collaboration with the five county hospitals and the INC Board, a mental health alliance serving southern Kane county, conducted a Community Health Assessment or "CHA." This type of assessment has been done on a three-year cycle to identify major health concerns within the community.
The data collection consisted of just over 1,050 residents participating in a phone survey as well as 158 key informants completing an online survey. Key informants or stakeholders are a mix of community leaders, healthcare providers and public health experts that have a particular knowledge about the health concerns and needs of Kane County. Upon analysis, 12 health issues were identified as "areas of opportunity." Stakeholders prioritized the list of health needs based on scope and severity, and the ability to impact the issue. This process yielded the top three issues as: (1) mental health, (2) nutrition, physical activity, and weight, and (3) substance abuse.
Results of the CHA are what steer the planning for the Community Health Improvement Plan or "CHIP." The current three CHIP priorities are Behavioral Health, Chronic Disease and Income & Education. Three action teams to address these issues were born out of the previous CHA cycle and are in full swing today. It will be recommended at the upcoming Public Health Committee meeting in July that these three priorities continue through the 2018-2022 cycle.
The aggregate data will eventually be posted on the county's Kane Health Counts webpage, which includes findings from the previous CHA.

Technical Assistance to Boost Small-Scale Manufacturing
Free technical assistance for communities pursuing economic development through small-scale manufacturing
When small-scale manufacturing is stitched into the fabric of a community, it enlivens community spaces and makes the economy more resilient by diversifying the market and providing higher wage jobs. Encouraging more small-scale manufacturing on main street or in other close-in, walkable neighborhoods can foster entrepreneurs and homegrown industries. These businesses create well-paying jobs for people with a variety of education and skill levels, and bring vitality to main streets and neighborhood centers-creating a foothold for future growth.
In partnership with the U.S. Economic Development Administration and Recast City, Smart Growth America is offering free technical assistance to community leaders interested in using small-scale manufacturing to help revitalize a downtown or neighborhood and create economic opportunity.
Applications for this technical assistance will be accepted until June 29, 2018 at 5 p.m. EST. Applications can be filled out online here or by downloading the PDF and returning it via email to info@smartgrowthamerica.org.

American Public Health Association webinar to highlight resources for improving health and promote active transportation
APHA believes in working across sectors to create and foster environments that support physical activity and advance health equity. Physically active people live longer and have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. Building environments that foster physical activity and active, non-motorized transportation helps encourage active lifestyles.
This webinar will feature resources and tools public health professionals can use to educate others on the importance of active transportation, including the 2018 Benchmarking Report on Bicycling and Walking in the United States, a study exploring access to trails in Milwaukee and success stories from the Planners4Health initiative. Public health practitioners can learn from and utilize these resources to advocate for active transportation initiatives in their communities.

Bicycle Friendly Community Program
Communities, businesses and universities can now apply for Bicycle Friendly designation
The League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) program provides a roadmap, hands-on assistance and recognition for states, communities, universities and businesses. The BFA program is a tool for states, communities, business and universities to make bicycling a real transportation and recreation option for all people.
The deadline to apply for a Bicycle Friendly designation as a community is August 9, 2018 at 11:59 PM.
